A urinary catheter is a flexible tube placed directly into the bladder, either via the urethra (indwelling catheter) or directly through the abdominal wall (suprapubic catheter). They are used for a variety of indications to allow urine to drain from the bladder and be collected in a drainage bag. Urinary catheterisation should only be undertaken by staff that are trained and competent to do so.
