Promoting Mental Well-being in Care Homes: Best Practice for Providers

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week (12th–18th May 2025), led by the Mental Health Foundation

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the importance of promoting positive mental well-being in care homes – not only for residents but also for the dedicated staff who support them.

The Mental Health Foundation has been championing mental health for over 20 years, and their annual campaign raises awareness and understanding of mental health issues across all sectors. In care homes, this means making mental wellbeing a central focus for both those in your care and those providing that care.

Why Mental Well-being Deserves a Place at the Top Table

Mental health is just as important as physical health. It affects how residents feel, behave, and interact with others, ultimately shaping their quality of life.

Mental well-being is also a key area of focus under the CQC’s new Single Assessment Framework, particularly within the Caring, Responsive, and Well-led quality statements. Inspectors are actively looking for evidence that your service recognises, responds to, and supports the emotional and psychological needs of both residents and staff.

Mental health and emotional well-being shouldn’t be an afterthought – they should be a natural part of your service’s culture.

Best Practice for Supporting Resident Mental Well-being

Here are some effective approaches care homes can implement to support residents’ mental well-being day to day:

  1. Personalised Activities
Tailor activities to each resident’s interests, life history, and cultural background. A blanket approach – like only offering bingo and group games – might not meet the needs of residents who prefer quieter, one-to-one engagement or have different cultural preferences.
  2. Outdoor Access and Sensory Spaces
Access to fresh air and nature, even small spaces like a patio garden or sensory room, can significantly boost mood and reduce anxiety.
  3. Meaningful Social Interaction
Create opportunities for residents to form connections – not just with staff, but also with one another. This can include reminiscence sessions, pet therapy, or using technology to help residents connect with family members.
  4. Mental Health Support Pathways
Ensure clear referral routes for residents who may need specialist mental health support, and make sure staff know how to access them.

Don’t Overlook Staff Mental Well-being

Your workforce is your greatest asset – and burnout is still a big concern across the sector.

Make sure your Well-led approach includes staff well-being by:

  • Offering regular, supportive supervision.
  • Promoting work-life balance and fair rotas.
  • Encouraging peer support and open conversations.
  • Providing access to Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) or external wellbeing resources.

By putting these measures in place, you help ensure your staff feel valued, motivated, and supported – ultimately reducing sickness absence, turnover, and job dissatisfaction.
